Isola del Giglio Desalination Plant: NRRP-Funded Upgrade Inaugurated

On 22 September, the upgrade of the desalination plant on Isola del Giglio (GR) was inaugurated. The project was carried out by Acquedotto del Fiora under the NRRP (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) “Green Islands” call and funded by the European Union through Next Generation EU. The investment, worth over €5.3 million, makes the plant more efficient and sustainable for both residents and tourists. Ai Engineering was fully responsible for the Detailed Design on behalf of RDR.

The works included the installation of three new reverse osmosis modules and a new microfiltration section, the optimisation of the filtration system and plant layout, upgrades to the electrical system, and a new 74.4 kW photovoltaic system. These changes have cut electricity consumption by around 11% per year and reduced energy-related CO₂ emissions by 10%. The desalination plant ensures the island’s water self-sufficiency all year round. In winter it supplies about 5 litres per second to a resident population of roughly 1,300. In summer, when tourist numbers can reach 15,000 people a day, output rises to as much as 25 litres per second.

The inauguration was organised by Acquedotto del Fiora together with the Municipality of Isola del Giglio. Attendees included Eugenio Giani, President of the Tuscany Region; Matteo Arcenni, President of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park; Riccardo Malpassi, Prefectural Commissioner; Roberto Renai and Anna Varriale, Chairman and CEO of Acquedotto del Fiora; and Alessandro Mazzei, Director of the Tuscan Water Authority (Autorità Idrica Toscana).
