Work has begun on the upgrade and modernization of SMAT’s Castiglione Torinese wastewater treatment plant, the largest treatment plant in Italy, with a treatment capacity of up to approximately 3.8 million population equivalent.
The project, worth over €15.8 million, includes the upgrade of the sludge dewatering section and the construction of a third thermal drying line, aimed at increasing treatment capacity and improving the plant’s energy and operational efficiency.
The contract was awarded to the Temporary Business Association led by Torricelli Srl of Forlì, together with Ruscalla Renato S.p.A. of Asti and Righi Solutions S.p.A. of Mercato Saraceno (FC), while the detailed design was developed by Ai Engineering.
The project also introduces advanced automation and supervision systems and enables the recovery of residual heat from the drying process, directing it to heat the anaerobic digesters.
The initiative confirms Ai Engineering’s commitment to developing innovative solutions for more efficient, resilient, and sustainable water infrastructure
